As Egypt campaigns for the vice-presidency of the African Union (AU) Commission, President Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi has called on Togo’s support. On Tuesday, January 28, an envoy was dispatched to the Togolese capital, Lomé, to reinforce the request.
The special envoy, Dr Hanan Morsy, a candidate for the vice-presidency and currently serving as the Deputy Executive Secretary and Chief Economist of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) since 2022, met with Togo’s Prime Minister, Victoire Dogbé. She delivered the Egyptian leader’s message to President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé.
During the meeting, Dr Morsy emphasized Togo’s significant role in continental leadership, stating, “Togo is known for its leadership on the continent.”
The elections for the AU Commission’s leadership positions are set to take place in February 2025 during the AU Summit. The elections will fill eight high-level roles, including president, vice-president, and commissioners, with candidates vying for positions in line with a regional portfolio distribution.
