A total of 352 prisoners have reportedly benefited from a presidential pardon granted by the Togolese Head of State Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé this Thursday, March 30, 2023.
According to the government, this remission, effective immediately, mainly concerns convicts at the end of their sentence, imprisoned in Lomé (216 prisoners), Atakpamé (75) and Notsè (61).
“The measure, regularly taken by the Head of State, is part of the implementation of the criminal policy of decongesting the country’s penitentiary establishments,” indicates the government.
As a reminder, 364 detainees, incarcerated in 12 prisons, had also regained their freedom following a presidential pardon last November.
Meanwhile, several political prisoners, mostly supporters of opposition parties, are still languishing behind bars in Togo.
