Togo and Czech Republic strengthen ties through new Consulate in Lomé

Last week, the Czech Republic marked a significant milestone in bilateral relations with Togo by inaugurating an honorary consulate in Lomé, the Togolese government announced on Monday 19th December 2023.

According to the Togolese authorities, Oukpedjo Abdou Saïd, appointed as the honorary consul by the Togolese government, is entrusted with the task of enhancing commercial, economic, sociocultural, and scientific ties between the two nations. Additionally, his role includes safeguarding the interests of Czech nationals in Togo.

“In light of these responsibilities that fall upon me, as of today, it will henceforth be a matter of defending the values and interests of the Czech Republic and its nationals in strict compliance with the laws and regulations of Togo. It will also involve promoting and strengthening bilateral relations,” emphasized Consul Oukpedjo.

Ján Füry, the Czech ambassador based in Accra overseeing Togo, views this establishment as “a significant step in bilateral relations.”

This development closely follows the recent announcement of the Czech Republic’s Honorary Consulate in Monrovia, Liberia, emphasizing the country’s diplomatic engagement in West Africa.

Notably, the Czech Republic’s interest in Togo dates back many years, with exploration in sectors such as energy, transportation, agriculture, technology, and agribusiness. The latest official meeting between the Foreign Ministers occurred at the 78th UN General Assembly in September, where Minister Jan Lipavsky commended the “promisingly developing cooperation with Togo in cyber-security and fighting cybercrime.” Czechia also expressed appreciation for Togolese mediation efforts in the Sahel region.
