The recently founded Togo National Liberation Movement Freedom (Togo-MLN) held its first political assembly over the weekend, concluding with ten resolutions advocating for democratic change in Togo.
Established in July, Togo-MLN’s inaugural event addressed national liberation, diaspora mobilization amid “extreme dictatorial” rule, and the diplomatic considerations surrounding Togo’s political future.
The fifth resolution calls on the international community to play a more active role in resolving Togo’s long-standing political crisis. Togo-MLN warns that continued instability could pose risks for regional peace and urges international partners to support Togo’s path to reform. “The political assembly of Freedom Togo-MLN issues an urgent appeal to the international community, urging greater involvement in resolving the prolonged political crisis in Togo, which has become a threat to peace. This involvement is crucial to prevent any risk of regional escalation and contagion”, read the document.
Other resolutions focus on uniting diaspora initiatives, urging the Togolese Armed Forces to support democratic efforts, encouraging accountability through sanctions against regime figures, and calling for legal actions against alleged human rights violators. Additionally, Togo-MLN emphasized the need for diaspora support to mobilize resources and expertise in the pursuit of Togo’s liberation.
The movement’s formation came shortly after a constitutional revision in May 2024 that eliminated presidential elections in Togo, a decision by the ruling party that has drawn varied responses from the Togolese public and diaspora.
