Togo : Opposition and Civil Society Demand Political Transition

Tensions are mounting in Togo as twelve political parties and civil society organizations jointly denounce the recent constitutional reform establishing the Fifth Republic. In a statement known as the “March 20 Declaration,” they describe the move as a “constitutional coup d’état” and warn of a looming legal vacuum after May 4, 2025 — the official end of President Faure Gnassingbé’s term.

Gathered in Lomé, leaders from CAR, CDPA, ADDI, FDS, ALCADES, ADMIS, DSA, LDP, MJS, Racine, Galaxie, and GAMESOU condemned what they see as a regime change imposed without the people’s consent. “The 1992 constitution, revised in 2019, clearly states that the President is elected by direct universal suffrage for a five-year term, renewable only once. Any amendment to this can only happen through a referendum,” the signatories reminded.

They called on the Togolese people to “reject this constitutional power grab and resist this new constitution,” warning that “any overthrow of the constitutional order is an imprescriptible crime against the nation.”

As the May 4 deadline approaches without plans for presidential elections, the coalition is demanding the immediate organization of “inclusive national talks” to prevent institutional collapse.

“We call on all sectors of society — teachers, lawyers, students, unions, healthcare workers, journalists, religious and traditional leaders, traders, artisans, farmers, transporters, and the diaspora — to rise together in this decisive fight for national liberation,” the declaration reads.

Gérald Adja, of the Dynamique pour la Majorité du Peuple (DMP), added: “If nothing is done by May 4 to hold elections, there will be a legal vacuum, and the country must turn to national dialogue.”

DMP coordinator Brigitte Kafui Adjamagbo-Johnson urged unity and mobilization for the upcoming March 23 rally in Akassimé, concluding: “Even if we are not all in the same coalition, we must align our actions to stop this constitution.”
