Chinese Ambassador Chao Weidong bids farewell after seven years in Togo

After seven years of service in Togo, Chinese Ambassador Chao Weidong has concluded his diplomatic mission. On Friday, May 30, the ambassador was received in audience by President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, marking the end of his tenure.

The meeting served as an opportunity for both of them to review the progress of bilateral cooperation between Togo and China, which has seen notable strengthening since the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit.

“I leave Togo with great satisfaction,” said Ambassador Chao after the meeting. “Sino-Togolese cooperation has gained remarkable momentum since the FOCAC 2024 summit, which opened a new chapter of friendship and partnership between our two countries. Several cooperation projects are underway, with many more in preparation.”

Diplomatic ties between Lomé and Beijing, established in 1972, have reached a historic high point in recent years. The relationship has been elevated to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership — the highest category in China’s diplomatic framework. This status reflects deepened political dialogue and increased coordination across economic, security, and multilateral fronts.

The two nations also share common views on major international issues, including peace, security, climate change, and global governance.
