Togo-English language Education to begin in primary schools

The Ministry responsible of Education in Togo has announced a significant change in the curriculum. English will soon be taught in preschool and primary schools, a decision was officially ratified in that regard on September 15, 2023.

The primary objective of this move is to equip young learners with essential linguistic and communication skills in English. This decision aligns with Togo’s broader strategy to diversify its global trade, following its recent inclusion in the Commonwealth just a year ago.

To facilitate this educational transformation, a variety of innovative tools will be employed. These resources encompass educational materials like audio and video resources, guides, manuals, tutorials, and more, alongside monitoring and evaluation mechanisms.

This transformative initiative will commence with a pilot phase set to launch in the upcoming 2023-2024 school year. It will be implemented across both public and private secular, as well as religious primary schools throughout the entire nation. Initially, the experiment will focus solely on the Preparatory Course or CP level. However, Minister Dodzi Kokoroko has assured that other primary sub-cycles will gradually adopt this approach in the years to come.
