Public outcry continues to grow in response to the an attack on Senegalese ECOWAS Member of Parliament Guy Marius Sagna, who was injured during a meeting with opposition leaders in Lomé, at the headquarters of the CDPA political party.
According to reports, the meeting, which took place on Sunday in the Togolese capital, was violently interrupted by a group of “militiamen” who stormed in, leaving several people injured, including the Senegalese MP. Sagna was in Lomé as part of a regional session of the ECOWAS Parliament and had attended the meeting with opposition figures.
Nathaniel Olympio, president of the Parti des Togolais, reacted strongly: “Guy Marius Sagna was reportedly injured. In a Togo governed by Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, where pan-Africanism is the new slogan of the regime, hosting a meeting between Africans at a political party’s headquarters leads to a violent surge of militiamen disrupting the gathering.”
Brigitte Kafui Adjamagbo-Johnson, MP and secretary general of the CDPA, also expressed her indignation. According to her, a unit of the National Gendarmerie, which had been present to ensure security, remained passive during the attack. It was only after the violence and destruction, including damaged vehicles and stolen phones, that the security forces reportedly left the scene.
“I never thought our country, Togo, was still in such a state,” lamented Adjamagbo-Johnson, noting that the meeting, originally planned to be held in a parish hall, had already been relocated due to pressure from the authorities.
Despite these incidents, Brigitte Adjamagbo-Johnson, the first woman to run for the presidency in Togo, remains resolute. “Togo will change, and we are the ones who will bring about that change. We are prepared to pay the price,” she hammered.
As for Guy Marius Sagna’s condition, sources indicate that he has received initial medical treatment and is under observation.
