Togo and Qatar deepen ties in first political consultation session

Lomé hosted the inaugural session of political consultations between Togo and Qatar on Wednesday, April 23, marking a new chapter in their diplomatic relationship established in 1997. The talks stem from a memorandum of understanding signed in Doha in 2018.

Led by Afo Salifou and Ahmed Bin Hassan Al Hammadi, Secretaries General of the respective foreign ministries, the discussions aimed to enhance bilateral cooperation and identify strategic sectors for collaboration. The two delegations reviewed the legal framework of their partnership and set out concrete plans for its future.

Qatar expressed strong interest in Togo’s economic potential, particularly in major initiatives like the Adétikopé Industrial Platform (PIA). Key sectors of interest include mining, agriculture, logistics, pharmaceuticals, and textiles.

Beyond economic ties, the session addressed areas such as education, health, social development, and counter-terrorism, highlighting shared positions on various international issues.

A new memorandum was signed focusing on youth and sports, with discussions also covering future cooperation in education, including scholarships for Togolese students, digital learning, and university partnerships. These topics will be revisited in the next session, to be held in Doha.

This first session is seen by both nations as a strategic milestone in their efforts to build a strong Lomé–Doha axis. During President Faure Gnassingbé’s official visit to Qatar in 2022, both he and Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani committed to fostering a robust, forward-looking bilateral relationship aimed at shared prosperity.
