Tokyo 2020 : Franco-Togolese Clarisse Agbégnénou wins the gold medal!

French judokate of Togolese origin, Clarisse Agbégnénou won the Olympic gold medal after beating Slovenian Tina Trstenjak in the final of the women’s -63 kg category at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on Tuesday.

Clarisse Agbégnénou fought from the start and did not give in until the -63 kg judo crown was hers at the Nippon Budokan in the Japanese capital on July 27.

To secure her ticket for the final, the Franco-Togolese dominated the Canadian Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard.

Before beating the latter, the five-time world champion and five-time European champion had advanced without a hitch in the table.

She began her fight with an expeditious victory against Cape Verdean Sandrine Billiet, beaten by ippon in 19 seconds.

In the quarter-finals, the 28-year-old again dominated Juul Franssen of the Netherlands, two-time bronze medalists at the world championships and once at the European championships.

In the final, Agbégnénou faced the Slovenian Tina Trstenjak, who beat him in the final of the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

The French judoka screamed and cried with joy at the end of the fight and even lifted her opponent into the air as her monumental feat sagged: she had now won all the major titles in her category.
