Togo has recently entered into another significant free roaming agreement, this time with Ghana, following a similar agreement with Benin. Commencing from March 1, 2024, mobile phone users traveling between Togo and Ghana will enjoy reduced communication costs without the hassle of changing SIM cards, all thanks to the elimination of roaming charges.
A bilateral agreement was signed to this effect on Wednesday, November 1, in Accra, between the regulatory authorities of both countries: ARCEP for Togo and NCA for Ghana.
The agreement, endorsed by the directors of both regulatory bodies, came after two days of discussions among mobile operators from both countries (Moov Africa Togo, Togo Cellulaire, MTN, Airtel, and Vodafone) in the Ghanaian capital.
In practical terms, for Togolese travelers in a roaming situation, incoming calls will be free during the first 30 consecutive days of their stay in Ghana, compared to the current charges of 240 CFA francs per minute with Togocel and 207 CFA francs with Moov. As for outgoing calls, which currently cost 279 CFA francs per minute with Togocel and 550 CFA francs with Moov, they will now be charged at 8.67 CFA francs.
Additionally, internet usage costs will be significantly reduced, with a new capped rate of 1.6 CFA francs per MB, compared to a maximum of 8400 CFA francs with Togocel and 200 CFA francs (at most) with Moov.
Similar agreements will be reached with other countries in the UEMOA/ECOWAS regions as part of the implementation of the community’s vision for mobility and digital integration, announced the Togolese telecommunications regulatory authority.
