WHO rewards Togo for eliminating some neglected tropical diseases

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Global Alliance for the Elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases presented on Monday in Lomé, a distinction to Togo for having eliminated on its territory, at least 4 neglected tropical diseases.

It is on the sidelines of the opening of the 72nd session of the Africa Regional Committee of the World Health Organization.

An event Lomé is hosting for the first time, from August 22 to 26, 2022 in a hybrid format (face-to-face and by videoconference).

The leader of the WHO, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Dr Matshidiso Moeti, Regional Director of WHO Africa, together handed over to the Togolese Head of State Faure Gnassingbé, the certificate and a trophy.

“These are dracunculiasis, lymphatic filariasis, human African trypanosomiasis and trachoma, including human African trypanosomiasis in 2020, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

“On the occasion of this 72nd session of the Africa Regional Committee of the World Health Organization, it is with pleasure that I present to you the WHO certificate of recognition for the elimination of 4 neglected tropical diseases, namely dracunculiasis, lymphatic filariasis, human African trypanosomiasis and trachoma” indicated the leader of WHO while presenting the distinction to Faure Gnassingbé

He further specified that “the elimination of these neglected tropical diseases is an exceptional achievement and a gift, not only for the Togolese people today, but also for generations to come”.

He concluded with an invitation to the Togolese authorities to continue their efforts to eliminate “other diseases that are problematic for the health of the Togolese people and to meet other challenges related to health in Togo”.
