Rights of persons with disabilities: Togo’s report submitted to UN

Togo’s initial report on the rights of persons with disabilities was reviewed by the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on Friday March 17, 2023 in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Togolese delegation to this 28th session was led by the Minister of Social Action, Promotion of Women and Literacy, Adjovi Lolonyo Apedoh-Anakoma.

The report lists the measures taken by Togo to improve the situation of persons with disabilities, particularly in the sectors of education, employment, health, social services and culture.

Without giving further details, the ministry says that several concerns were raised by the actors present in the room during the debate phase.

According to the government, measures are being taken to better protect children with disabilities and promote access for persons with disabilities to infrastructure, goods and public and private services.

“Despite the progress made, our room for improvement on this topic is still large and commits us to further improve our offer of protection and promotion of these rights”, said the Minister.

Indeed, Human Rights Watch, having also noticed abuses against people with mental disabilities in Togo, issued recommendations to the country while the United Nations committee was carrying out its analysis.
