Togo’s President of the Constitutional Court, Aboudou Assouma is dead

The President of the Constitutional Court of Togo since 2007, Aboudou Assouma died at the age of 78 following a long illness, we learned at the start of the weekend.

One of the followers of the late Gnassingbé Eyadéma, the high magistrate played a central role in 1987 alongside the general-president in the creation of the national human rights commission. He was also the vice-president at its installation.

Appointed Minister in charge of the Armed Forces in December 1991, he left the government of national unity of the transition in 1992.

Aboudou Assouma then became President of the Constitutional Court in 2007, appointed by Faure Gnassingbé. His mandate was renewed twice, in 2014 and 2019. He announced the final results of presidential elections in 2010, 2015 and 2020.

The Togolese head of state normally has one month to appoint a new president of the Constitutional Court.
