Togo-Faure and Faustin-Archange call for a ceasefire in Sudan

In a joint press release on Tuesday evening, the Togolese Head of State Faure Gnassingbé and his Central African counterpart Faustin-Archange Touadéra, called for a definitive end to the fighting in Sudan.

In Sudan, two generals and their troops have been fighting for the conquest of power since April 15. The conflict has opposed the regular army, under the command of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane who leads the country, in General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo’s Rapid Support Forces. According to the latest reports, at least 822 civilians have been killed in these clashes so far.

A situation that worries the two leaders, according to this joint press release made public on June 27, 2023 on the occasion of a visit that the Central African President Faustin Archange Touadéra made in the Togolese capital.

“At the security level, they expressed their deep concern at the resurgence of crises and conflict situations in certain regions of Africa. In particular, they called for a definitive cessation of fighting in Sudan,” reads the press release.

In addition, the two heads of state also expressed concern about the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Faure Gnassingbé and his host called with all their wishes, “for the establishment of lasting peace in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo”. Another part of Africa torn by nearly three decades of war maintained by many armed groups that come and go according to the conflicts, against a backdrop of looting, rape and murder.
