Togo sets dates for 2024 parliamentary and regional elections

In a recent session of the council of ministers held in Lomé on Thursday, February 8th, the Togolese government has officially announced the dates for the upcoming parliamentary and regional elections. The polls are scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 13th, 2024.

To ensure a smooth and secure voting process, early voting arrangements have been established in accordance with the electoral code. Members of the defense and security forces, paramilitary units, and the operational reserve will cast their votes 72 hours prior to the general voting day. According to the authorities, this measure aims to uphold citizen security and maintain peace and stability, especially in light of existing security concerns.

The election campaign period has also been outlined by the executive. The campaign for the combined ballot will kick off on Thursday, March 28th, at midnight and will run until Thursday, April 11th, at 11:59 PM, spanning a total of 15 days. This window provides candidates with the opportunity to engage with voters and present their platforms before the elections.

In terms of financial requirements for participation, the government has established participation fees through a decree. Additionally, the fees are halved for female candidates, in line with the electoral code’s provisions.

In contrast to the 2018 elections, which saw a boycott by the opposition, they are now poised to engage in the electoral process. They are preparing to contest against the ruling party and have rallied their supporters during the voter registration phase, despite reporting some irregularities.
