Togo-Covid-19 : Resumption of vaccination campaign

Togo resumes the anti-Covid-19 vaccination campaign after a few days’ break observed. Vaccination operations will start inside the country on Wednesday April 21, 2021.

According to the authorities, the interruption of vaccination observed for a few days in Lomé the capital was intended to review the vaccination strategy to best meet “the strong demand observed in terms of vaccination”.

According to Djibril Mohaman, president of the national response unit against the Covid-19 pandemic in Togo, this increase in demand stems from the strengthening of awareness, especially since now more socio-professional categories have been targeted, in particular teachers, ICAT (Institute for Technical Advice and Support) agents, motorcycle taxi drivers, prisoners and four-wheeled drivers.

Vaccination operations will be relocated to accessible public places that are well known to the population, such as football fields “so as to better contain the wave of pending demand”.

Despite strong reluctance to be vaccinated in Togo at the start of this vaccination campaign launched on March 10, only “160,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine have already been administered on the sites so far.

Further vaccine deliveries are expected in Togo in the coming days. 200,000 doses of the Sinovac vaccine will come from China over the next week. Another batch of AstraZeneca is also expected in the coming days.

The country will also receive “at least 100,000 doses of the Pfeizer vaccine and around 3 million doses of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine by the end of June 2021”.

As of April 19, 2021, Togo recorded 12,553 confirmed cases of Covid-19 among which 2,203 cases are still active, 10,230 people have recovered and 120 people have died.
