DMK urges UN Security Council to address political crisis in Togo

The Dynamique Monseigneur Kpodzro (DMK) has issued an urgent plea to the United Nations Security Council, calling for immediate intervention in Togo’s deepening political crisis. In an open letter addressed to Boštjan Malovrh, President of the UN Security Council, the DMK denounces human rights violations, sovereignty breaches, and criticizes the UN for its lack of response.

The letter comes amid the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, which began on September 24 and runs until September 28, 2024.

In the document, the DMK recounts key historical events, such as the assassination of Togo’s first president, Sylvanus Olympio, and accuses France of continuing to interfere in the country’s internal affairs. It also condemns the UN’s silence, particularly following Togo’s May 2024 constitutional amendment. The change transitioned the nation into a parliamentary system, indirectly extending the current president’s tenure beyond what was originally allowed under the prior constitution.

“The UN’s ongoing indifference to Togo’s situation, exemplified by its silence on the constitutional coup of May 6, 2024, has resulted in a unique global anomaly, with two constitutions now in force in Togo,” the letter, signed by Dr. Edem Atsou Kwasi, stated. The document further highlights the ethical, legal, and political challenges posed by this situation, urging the Security Council to intervene as the UN’s credibility is at stake.

The DMK argues that the Togolese people have been deprived of their democratic rights for years, citing rigged elections and widespread human rights abuses. Despite numerous appeals, the UN’s failure to act has, according to the DMK, led to the erosion of Togo’s sovereignty and the deaths of key opposition figures.

“Most international institutions agree on the massive human rights violations, political crimes, and economic mismanagement in Togo,” Dr. Kwasi noted in the letter.

The DMK is calling on the Security Council to take action before the situation worsens, urging enforcement of UN resolutions that safeguard sovereignty and human rights. The letter stresses the importance of international support to restore democracy and protect the rights of Togolese citizens, who have lived under dictatorship for decades.

In its conclusion, the political party appeals to the UN to uphold its mandate of promoting equality and human dignity, reminding the organization of its responsibility to defend the sovereignty of all nations, including Togo.
