Togolese activist Honoré Sitsopé Sokpor, widely known by his pseudonym “Affectio”, was sent back to prison on Wednesday following a hearing before the investigating judge at the Lomé Court of Appeal.
Arrested on January 12, 2025, the activist was jailed two days later at Lomé Civil Prison for publishing a poem titled “Fais ta part” (“Do Your Part”) on social media. He faces charges of undermining the internal security of the state and will have to wait another eight days to learn his fate.
Affectio arrived at the Court of Appeal of Lomé on Wednesday morning, handcuffed, and was immediately led to Corridor No. 3, where the hearing room is located. Minutes later, he appeared before a panel of three judges, accompanied by his two lawyers. The session was held behind closed doors, as is standard in such proceedings, one of his lawyers confirmed. The court is reviewing an appeal filed by his legal team seeking his release.
The charges stem from the poem “Do Your Part”, where Affectio denounces injustice and oppression, urging readers to “rise up.” Authorities have interpreted this call as incitement to rebellion and insurrection against the country’s institutions.
The activist’s imprisonment has sparked widespread outrage among the public and ignited debate among political figures and human rights organizations regarding freedom of expression in Togo.
On Wednesday, family members, friends, and human rights advocates gathered in large numbers at the courthouse to show support. However, they left disheartened and disappointed as Affectio was led back to prison. The court’s decision is expected in eight days.
